David Lange 1942 – 2005
Biography
David Lange was born on August 4, 1942, in Ōtāhuhu, Auckland, where he spent his early years in this working-class suburb. He would go on to become one of New Zealand’s most significant political leaders, serving as Prime Minister from 1984 to 1989. During his tenure, he shaped the nation’s direction through a period of considerable change and development.
Throughout his career in public service, Lange left a lasting impact on New Zealand’s political landscape. His leadership during the mid-1980s proved formative for the country as it navigated economic and social challenges of that era. Though his time as Prime Minister was relatively brief, his influence extended beyond his years in office.
Lange spent his final years in Middlemore before his death on August 13, 2005, from kidney failure at the age of 62. He was laid to rest at Waikaraka Cemetery in the Auckland Region, a fitting place of rest for a man whose life was deeply rooted in Auckland.
