Biography

Cuilén was a king who ruled over Alba during the medieval period. His reign represented an important chapter in the early history of Scotland, when the kingdom of Alba was consolidating power and establishing its place among the competing powers of Britain. Though details of his life remain sparse in historical records, his position as a monarch made him a significant figure in the development of this ancient realm.

In his final years, Cuilén traveled far from his homeland, eventually reaching Abingdon-on-Thames in England. It was there, on January 1, 971, that he died. The circumstances surrounding his death remain unknown to history, as no record of the cause has survived the centuries. His passing marked the end of his reign and the close of a chapter in Alba’s royal lineage.

Recognizing his importance to the kingdom and his royal status, Cuilén was given an honored burial at St Andrews in Fife, a site of great spiritual and political significance in medieval Scotland. His interment there reflected both his dignity as a former king and the reverence shown to Alba’s departed monarchs. Through his burial place and the memory preserved in historical records, Cuilén remains connected to the rich tapestry of early Scottish history.
