Biography
Charles II was born on January 1, 1254, in Naples, entering the world during a transformative period in Italian history. He would go on to rule the Kingdom of Naples for twenty-five years, from 1284 until his death in 1309, overseeing the kingdom through a complex era of political development and dynastic consolidation. His reign represented a significant chapter in the history of the southern Italian kingdom.
Throughout his quarter-century as sovereign, Charles II worked to maintain Naples’s position among the competing powers of medieval Italy. He remained connected to his homeland throughout his life, never departing far from the city of his birth.
Charles II died on May 13, 1309, in his native Naples at fifty-five years of age. His life’s arc—from birth to death within the same city—reflected his deep roots in the Neapolitan crown and kingdom. He was laid to rest at the Church of Santa Chiara in Naples, where his final resting place honored the monarch who had guided the realm for nearly three decades.
