Biography
Muhammad of Ghor was born on January 1, 1144, in the region of Ghor, where he would eventually rise to prominence as a ruler of the Ghurid Sultanate. Throughout his life, he demonstrated the leadership qualities necessary to govern during a dynamic period in medieval history. His reign, which began in 1173, spanned more than three decades of rule over the sultanate, a time of significant political importance in the region.
On March 22, 1206, Muhammad of Ghor’s life was cut short by a tragic act of violence in Dhamiak, when he was fatally wounded by a stab wound. Though his reign ended unexpectedly and violently, his legacy was preserved through his final resting place. He was interred in Sohawa Tehsil in what is now Jhelum District, Pakistan, where he remains remembered as a notable figure of his era. His life spanned sixty-two years, during which he left an indelible mark on the political landscape of the Ghurid Sultanate and the broader medieval Islamic world.
