Biography

Warren Hastings was born on December 6, 1732, in Churchill, beginning a life that would leave a significant mark on British colonial history. Rising through the ranks of the East India Company, he eventually attained the position of Governor-General of Bengal, serving in this influential role from 1773 to 1785. During his tenure, he navigated the complex political and administrative challenges of governing one of Britain’s most important colonial territories, shaping policies that would affect millions of lives across the Indian subcontinent.

After leaving his official post, Hastings returned to England, where he spent his remaining years at Daylesford. He passed away on August 22, 1818, at the age of eighty-five, concluding a long and consequential life. His remains were laid to rest in Daylesford, Adlestrop, in the Cotswolds, where they remain to this day.
