Biography

Chlothar III was a Frankish king who ruled over Neustria and Burgundy during the seventh century. Born on January 1, 650, he inherited his throne during a transformative period in early medieval Europe. His reign represented an important chapter in the history of the Frankish kingdoms, as these territories played a central role in shaping the political landscape of post-Roman Western Europe.

Though details of his life remain sparse in historical records, Chlothar III’s reign occurred during a time of significant change within the Frankish realms. As a monarch of two substantial territories, he bore responsibility for governing vast populations and managing the complex relationships between noble families and religious institutions that characterized the era. His rule reflected the challenges and opportunities facing early medieval rulers.

Chlothar III died on January 1, 673, at the age of twenty-three, succumbing to plague. His death marked the end of a relatively brief reign, yet his position in the royal succession ensured his place in Frankish dynastic history. He was interred at the Basilica of Saint-Denis in France, one of the most significant religious sites in the Frankish kingdom and a traditional burial place for royalty, reflecting the importance of his lineage and station.
