Biography

Jean-de-Dieu Soult was born on March 29, 1769, in the village of Saint-Amans-Soult, where he would spend his earliest years before embarking on a remarkable career in service to France. Over the course of his life, he rose to prominence as a French Marshal and statesman, earning distinction through decades of military and political leadership during a transformative period in French history.

Soult’s most significant contributions came during his tenure as Prime Minister of France, which he served across three separate periods: from 1832 to 1834, again from 1834 to 1839, and finally from 1840 to 1847. These appointments reflected the trust placed in him during years of considerable political change and complexity in the French nation. His long career demonstrated both military acumen and political skill.

On November 26, 1851, Soult passed away at the age of eighty-two, having returned to his native Saint-Amans-Soult in his final years. He was laid to rest in his birthplace, completing a full circle from his origins to his legacy. His life spanned nearly the entire nineteenth century, and he left an indelible mark on French governance and military tradition.
