Carol II of Romania

Biography

Carol II was born on October 15, 1893, at Peleș Castle, the royal residence nestled in the Carpathian Mountains of Romania. Born into one of Europe’s great royal houses, he was destined from birth for a life of privilege and responsibility. His childhood unfolded within the grandeur of Romania’s most distinguished palace, where he received the education and training befitting a future monarch.

In 1930, Carol II ascended to the throne of Romania, a kingdom navigating the complex political and social currents of interwar Europe. His reign lasted a decade, from 1930 until 1940, a period marked by significant challenges both within Romania and across the continent. During these years, he served as a figurehead and leader during turbulent times in Romanian history.

On April 4, 1953, Carol II died in Estoril, Portugal, from a myocardial infarction. His final years were spent away from Romania, reflecting the shifting circumstances of his later life. He was laid to rest at Curtea de Argeș Monastery in Curtea de Argeș, returning in death to his native land. His burial site remains a place of historical significance, marking the final resting place of one of Romania’s twentieth-century monarchs.
