Peter II of Yugoslavia 1923 – 1970
Biography
Peter II was born in Belgrade on September 6, 1923, and would become the last King of Yugoslavia. He ascended to the throne in 1934, inheriting a nation navigating complex political and social challenges during a turbulent period in European history. His reign, which lasted until 1945, coincided with some of the most consequential years of the twentieth century, as Yugoslavia faced the pressures and upheaval of World War II.
Following the dramatic changes that swept through Yugoslavia after 1945, Peter II’s life took him far from his homeland. He spent his later years in exile, eventually settling in Denver, Colorado, where he lived until his death on November 3, 1970. He died from liver cirrhosis at the age of 47, ending a life marked by displacement and loss.
Peter II was laid to rest at Oplenac in Topola, Serbia, returning to Yugoslav soil in death. Though his reign was brief and interrupted by war and political transformation, he remains a significant figure in the history of Yugoslavia, representing the final chapter of the kingdom’s royal lineage.
