Alexander III of Scotland

Biography

Alexander III was born on September 4, 1241, in Roxburgh, arriving into a Scotland that would soon know his steady hand. He ascended to the Scottish throne in 1249, beginning a reign that would span nearly four decades and shape the kingdom’s destiny during a formative period in medieval history.

Throughout his years as King of Scots, Alexander III guided his realm with the wisdom and resolve expected of a crowned monarch. His long reign allowed Scotland to develop stability and flourish during the thirteenth century, a time when neighboring kingdoms experienced considerable upheaval. He remained devoted to his duties until his final days.

On March 19, 1286, tragedy struck when Alexander fell from his horse in Fife. The accident proved fatal, ending his life at forty-four years old and closing a significant chapter in Scottish history. His body was laid to rest at Dunfermline Abbey, one of Scotland’s most sacred burial grounds, where he remains honored among the kingdom’s great figures.
