Pyrrhus -317 – -271
Biography
Pyrrhus was a king of Epirus whose reign spanned two significant periods in the ancient Greek world. Born on January 1, 317 BCE, in Epirus, he came into power during a turbulent era marked by the fragmentation of Alexander the Great’s empire. His rule extended across two separate terms: from 307 to 302 BCE and again from 297 to 272 BCE, reflecting the political instability that characterized the Hellenistic period.
Throughout his lifetime, Pyrrhus navigated the complex dynamics of ancient Mediterranean politics and military affairs. His two non-consecutive reigns demonstrate both the challenges of maintaining power in his era and his determination to reclaim his throne. He spent much of his life engaged with the great powers surrounding his kingdom, establishing himself as a notable figure in the political landscape of his time.
Pyrrhus died on January 1, 271 BCE, in Argos, having lived exactly fifty-four years. His death marked the end of a life lived at the center of Hellenistic dynastic struggles and regional conflicts. Though his specific burial place remains unknown, his legacy endured in the historical memory of the ancient world as a king who maintained his kingdom through periods of great upheaval.
