Christian II of Denmark 1481 – 1559
Biography
Christian II was born on July 10, 1481, in Nyborg, Denmark, destined for a life of royal responsibility across the Nordic kingdoms. Over the course of his life, he would come to rule not only Denmark but also Norway and Sweden, holding authority over vast territories during a pivotal period in Northern European history. His position as king of these three realms placed him among the most powerful monarchs of his era, though the challenges of ruling such diverse lands would prove formidable.
After nearly eight decades of life, Christian II died on January 25, 1559, in Kalundborg, Denmark. His final resting place was St. Canute’s Cathedral in Odense Municipality, where he was laid to rest with the honors befitting a king who had ruled multiple nations.
