Biography

Miklós Horthy was born on June 18, 1868, in Kenderes, Hungary, where his life would eventually return full circle. He rose to prominence as a military and political leader, serving as Regent of Hungary for nearly a quarter century. His tenure from 1920 to 1944 represented a significant and formative period in Hungarian history during the interwar years and World War II era.

Horthy’s long life spanned nearly nine decades of European history, witnessing profound transformations across the continent. After departing Hungary during the turbulent final years of World War II, he spent his remaining years abroad, living in Estoril until his death on February 9, 1957. His legacy remained deeply connected to his birthplace; he was ultimately interred in Kenderes, returning to the soil from which he came, where he rests in the Karcag District of Hungary.
