Biography

Septimius Severus was born on January 1, 146, in Leptis Magna, a prosperous city in North Africa. From humble origins in this thriving Mediterranean port, he would rise to become one of Rome’s most significant leaders. His life spanned sixty-five years of remarkable achievement, during which he transformed the Roman Empire through military reform and administrative innovation. Beginning his rule in 193 CE, Severus brought stability to an empire fractured by civil war and established a dynasty that would rule Rome for decades to come.

During his eighteen-year reign until his death on February 4, 211, Severus strengthened Rome’s borders and reorganized its military structure, leaving an indelible mark on imperial governance. He died in Eboracum in Britannia, far from the heart of Rome, yet his influence would endure throughout the empire. His final resting place was Castel Sant’Angelo in Rome, where he was laid to rest in honor befitting his station. Septimius Severus remains remembered as a transformative figure whose leadership extended from the deserts of Africa to the furthest reaches of Roman Britain.
