Biography

Thomas Hobbes lived a remarkably long life spanning more than nine decades, from his birth on April 5, 1588, in Westport to his death on December 4, 1679, at Hardwick Hall. His extraordinary longevity allowed him to witness and reflect upon nearly a century of English history, from the reign of Queen Elizabeth I through the Restoration period.

As an English philosopher, Hobbes devoted himself to understanding the fundamental nature of human society and governance. His intellectual pursuits extended across many years, during which he developed ideas that would challenge and shape philosophical thought for generations to come. His work represented a serious engagement with the pressing questions of his age.

Following his passing at the age of ninety-one, Hobbes was laid to rest at the Church of St John the Baptist in Ault Hucknall, where his memory has been preserved. His final resting place stands as a testament to a life dedicated to rigorous thought and philosophical inquiry, reflecting the esteem in which he was held by those who knew him and those who would study his legacy in the centuries that followed.
