Yevno Azef 1869 – 1918
Biography
Yevno Azef was born on January 1, 1869, in Lyskava, a town in the Russian Empire. He would become known as a figure in the Russian revolutionary movement, a period marked by intense political upheaval and social transformation across the region. Though details of his early life remain limited, his involvement in revolutionary activities placed him among those seeking fundamental change in Russian society during a turbulent era.
Azef’s life spanned nearly five decades, during which he witnessed and participated in some of the most significant political developments of his time. His journey took him from his birthplace in the Russian heartland to eventual exile, reflecting the displacement and danger faced by many revolutionaries of his generation. The circumstances of his life and work remain part of the complex historical record of Russian political movements in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
On April 24, 1918, Azef died in Charlottenburg, Germany, from kidney failure. By this time, he was far from his native land, having sought refuge abroad as so many Russian émigrés did following the revolution and civil war. He was laid to rest at Wilmersdorf Cemetery in Berlin, a final resting place that speaks to the diaspora of Russian political figures scattered across Europe in the aftermath of profound historical change.
