Pietro Della Valle 1586 – 1652
Biography
Pietro Della Valle was born on April 11, 1586, in Rome, during a time of great intellectual and artistic flourishing in the Italian Renaissance. A man of remarkable versatility, he distinguished himself as both an explorer and a composer, embodying the Renaissance ideal of the well-rounded scholar and artist. His life spanned sixty-six years, all of which were spent in or connected to his native city, where he developed his talents and pursued his varied interests.
Though details of his specific expeditions and musical compositions remain sparse in the historical record, Della Valle’s dual reputation as an explorer and musician speaks to his curious and creative mind. His contributions to both disciplines reflected the spirit of an era when boundaries between different fields of knowledge and artistic expression were far more fluid than in later centuries.
On April 21, 1652, Pietro Della Valle died in Rome, concluding a life lived in the service of exploration and art. He was laid to rest at the basilica of Santa Maria in Aracoeli, one of Rome’s most historic and venerable churches, a fitting final resting place for a man who had devoted his life to understanding the world and enriching it through music and discovery.
