Wanda Landowska

Biography

Wanda Landowska was born on July 5, 1879, in Warsaw, Poland, during a rich period of European musical development. She devoted her life to the harpsichord, an instrument that had largely fallen out of favor in the modern concert hall. Through her artistry and dedication, Landowska became a pioneering force in the revival of the harpsichord, bringing this delicate and historically significant instrument back into the musical consciousness of the twentieth century.

Her career spanned much of the twentieth century, and she earned recognition across Europe as both a performer and interpreter of baroque music. Landowska’s work helped establish the harpsichord as a serious concert instrument and influenced how musicians and audiences understood early music. Her contributions extended beyond performance, shaping the broader classical music landscape during her lifetime.

Landowska lived much of her later life in France, embracing a Polish-French identity that reflected her heritage and adopted home. She passed away on August 16, 1959, in Lakeville, after a period of illness. Her legacy endured long after her death, and she was laid to rest at Taverny cemetery in France, where her memory continues to be honored among those who cherish the harpsichord and the musical traditions she so passionately preserved.
