Theuderic IV 713 – 737
Biography
Theuderic IV was a Frankish king whose reign occurred during a transformative period in early medieval Europe. Born on January 1, 713, he ascended to the throne during his youth, inheriting a kingdom shaped by the political complexities of the Merovingian era. Though details of his birthplace remain lost to history, his lineage connected him to one of Europe’s most influential royal dynasties.
During his reign, Theuderic IV ruled over the Frankish territories as the political landscape continued to shift around him. His twenty-four years of life were spent navigating the demands of kingship during an age when real power often lay with influential nobles and mayors of the palace. Despite the fragmentary historical record, his rule represents an important chapter in Frankish history.
Theuderic IV died on January 1, 737, at an age when his reign might have blossomed into greater prominence. The circumstances surrounding his death were not recorded by the chroniclers of his time. In recognition of his royal status, he was laid to rest at the Basilica of Saint-Denis in Saint-Denis, France—a sacred burial ground reserved for Frankish royalty and an honor reflecting his place within the kingdom’s hierarchy.
