Biography

Stephen IV of Hungary was born on January 1, 1133, in Buda, where he would spend his early years in the royal household. Rising to prominence, he would eventually ascend to the throne as King of Hungary and Croatia, bearing responsibility for these significant realms during a formative period in Central European history. His reign represented an important chapter in the Hungarian monarchy’s development during the twelfth century.

Stephen’s life was cut tragically short on April 18, 1165, when he died in Zemun at the age of thirty-two. His death by poison marked a sudden and violent end to his reign, reflecting the dangerous political currents that often surrounded royal succession during the medieval period. The circumstances surrounding his death underscore the vulnerabilities faced by rulers of his era.

Following his passing, Stephen was laid to rest at Székesfehérvár Basilica in Székesfehérvár, Hungary, a place of great significance to Hungarian royalty. This final resting place honored his position as one of Hungary’s crowned monarchs, and his burial there preserved his memory within the spiritual and political heart of the kingdom. Though his reign was relatively brief, Stephen IV remains part of Hungary’s royal lineage and medieval history.
