Stauracius 775 – 812
Biography
Stauracius was born on January 1, 775, though the place of his birth remains unknown to history. He would go on to hold the highest office of the Byzantine Empire, serving as emperor during a pivotal period in the empire’s early ninth century. Despite the prominence of his position, relatively little detail survives about his personal life and the circumstances of his early years.
His reign came to an end on January 15, 812, when he died in Constantinople at the age of thirty-seven. His death resulted from gangrene, a serious medical condition that proved fatal even to an emperor with access to the finest physicians of his time. The location of his burial has not been recorded in historical documents, leaving another gap in what we know of this Byzantine ruler’s final resting place.
Though his life was relatively brief, Stauracius occupied a significant role in Byzantine history. The sparse details that remain of his existence stand as a testament to how much of the ancient and medieval world’s records have been lost to time, leaving us with only fragments of the lives of even the most powerful figures of their age.
