Biography

Severus was a Roman emperor of the early fourth century, born on January 1, 300, in Illyria, a region along the eastern Adriatic coast. He came of age during a transformative period in Roman history, when the empire was undergoing significant political and military reorganization under the rule of Diocletian and his successors.

Though his reign was brief, lasting only seven years before his death on September 1, 307, in Ravenna, Severus occupied an important place in the succession of Roman leadership during this turbulent era. His life spanned a crucial moment when the empire’s structure was being fundamentally reshaped, and he served as emperor during the complex transition of power that would define the early fourth century.

Severus died in Ravenna, then an important administrative center, from exsanguination—a loss of blood that proved fatal. The circumstances surrounding his death remain part of the historical record of this pivotal period in Roman imperial succession, though details of his reign and its achievements have been preserved only in fragments across surviving historical sources.
