Biography

Robert Mugabe was born on February 21, 1924, in Kutama, Zimbabwe, where his life would be deeply rooted in his homeland throughout his years. He went on to become the second President of Zimbabwe, serving in this role from 1987 until his retirement in 2017. During his three decades of leadership, Mugabe played a significant role in shaping the nation’s political landscape and development.

Mugabe’s life spanned nearly a century, witnessing tremendous changes in his country and continent. On September 6, 2019, he passed away at Gleneagles Hospital, leaving behind a legacy that continues to be discussed and reflected upon by many. Following his wishes, he was laid to rest in Kutama, the village of his birth, returning him to the place where his remarkable journey had begun.

His passing marked the end of an era in Zimbabwe’s modern history. Though his tenure and its impacts remain subjects of considerable historical debate, Mugabe’s presence defined a critical chapter in the nation’s post-independence period.
