Raymond A. Brown

Attorney. He was a veteran New Jersey defense attorney noted for his many controversial high-profile cases. In 1960s, he defended professional boxer Rubin “Hurricane” Carter, poet Amiri Baraka and Soviet spy John W. Butenko. He gained a reputation as civil rights lawyer in 1968, when he defended black students which included his son, were arrested for taking over a building at Columbia University, New York. He defended Black Liberation Army member Joanne Chesimard in 1973 and physician Mario E. Jascalevich identified as Dr. X , for charges that he murdered five surgical patients at Riverdell Hospital, New Jersey, resulting in Dr. Jascalevich being acquitted in 1978. He also represented politicians, organized crime figures and union officials, as well as ordinary clients. He was the president of the New Jersey chapter of the N.A.A.C.P. for 12 years and is a member of the Lawyer Hall of Fame. Cause of death: pulmonary disease.
