Peter III of Russia 1728 – 1762
Biography
Peter III came into the world on February 21, 1728, in Kiel, far from the Russian empire he would one day rule. His path to the throne was shaped by the dynastic currents of eighteenth-century European courts, eventually leading him to assume leadership of Russia in 1762. As the seventh Emperor of Russia, he held a position of tremendous responsibility during a pivotal moment in the nation’s history.
His reign, though brief, came during a time of significant change for the Russian state. Peter III’s rule lasted only a short period before his death on July 17, 1762, at Ropsha Palace. The circumstances surrounding the end of his life remain uncertain, as the exact cause of his death was never officially recorded.
Following his passing, Peter III was laid to rest at the Peter and Paul Cathedral in the Petrogradsky District, one of Russia’s most significant burial sites for imperial figures. Though his time as emperor was fleeting, he remains an important figure in Russian history, representing a transitional period in the nation’s eighteenth-century development.
