Peter III of Aragon

Biography

Peter III was born on January 1, 1240, in Valencia, entering the world during a time of significant change in the Mediterranean. He would go on to shape the political landscape of his era through his role as a ruling monarch, holding the crowns of both Aragon and Valencia simultaneously. His reign spanned nearly a decade, from 1276 until his death in 1285, a period marked by his dual responsibilities across these important territories.

During his time as king, Peter III expanded his influence beyond the Iberian Peninsula, eventually claiming the throne of Sicily as well. This placed him among the most powerful rulers of his time, controlling territories that stretched across the western Mediterranean and the Spanish kingdoms. His ability to hold multiple crowns spoke to both his political acumen and the complex dynastic arrangements of medieval Europe.

Peter III died on November 18, 1285, in Vilafranca del Penedès, concluding a reign that had left its mark on the regions he governed. He was laid to rest at Santes Creus, a monastery in Aiguamúrcia, Spain, a final resting place befitting his royal station. His legacy endured through the kingdoms he had ruled and the territorial expansions he had secured during his years of power.
