Pepin the Short 715 – 768
Biography
Pepin the Short was born on January 1, 715, in Liège, beginning a life that would reshape the political landscape of early medieval Europe. Rising to prominence during a transformative period in Frankish history, he became King of the Franks in 751, a position he would hold with determination until his death. Though born into an era of significant social and political change, Pepin established himself as a figure of considerable influence and authority during his reign.
Pepin’s life spanned fifty-three years, concluding on September 28, 768, in Saint-Denis. His death marked the end of an important chapter in Frankish leadership, though his legacy would extend far beyond his lifetime. The significance he held in his era was reflected in the honor of his final resting place—the Basilica of Saint-Denis, one of the most sacred religious sites in the Frankish kingdom. His burial there acknowledged both his status and the respect he had commanded during his years of rule.
