Pedro V of Portugal 1837 – 1861
Biography
Pedro V came into the world on September 16, 1837, in Viseu, Portugal, during a transformative period in his nation’s history. Born into the Portuguese royal house, he would go on to serve as King of Portugal, ascending to the throne in 1853 at a young age. His reign, though brief, occurred during significant years of change for the Portuguese monarchy and state.
King Pedro V’s life was cut tragically short when he succumbed to typhoid fever on November 11, 1861, in Lisbon at just twenty-four years of age. His untimely death marked the end of a reign that had lasted only eight years, leaving behind questions about what his continued rule might have accomplished for Portugal. The brevity of his life and reign underscore the fragility that marked this period of European history.
In recognition of his royal status and significance to the Portuguese nation, Pedro V was laid to rest at the Monastery of São Vicente de Fora in Lisbon, a burial place befitting his station. This monastery, one of Portugal’s most important religious and historical sites, became his final resting place and a lasting monument to his memory within the kingdom he once ruled.
