Biography

Pascual Jordan was born on October 18, 1902, in Hanover, Germany, during a period of profound scientific transformation. His life would span nearly eight decades, witnessing extraordinary developments in physics and European history. Jordan distinguished himself through contributions to his field while also engaging in the public sphere beyond the laboratory, reflecting the complex role many intellectuals played throughout the twentieth century.

Following a career that touched both scientific and political dimensions, Jordan lived through some of history’s most turbulent decades in Germany. His work and life were inevitably shaped by the era in which he lived, as were those of so many of his generation. Though the specific details of his later years remain modest in the historical record, his presence during this crucial period in both science and German society remains part of the broader story of mid-twentieth century Europe.

Jordan passed away on July 31, 1980, in Hamburg, concluding a long life of engagement with both knowledge and civic responsibility. He was laid to rest at Ohlsdorf Cemetery in Hamburg-Nord, where he remains remembered as part of Germany’s scientific and intellectual heritage.
