Biography

Muteesa II was born on November 19, 1924, in Kampala, Uganda, during a period of significant change in East African history. He ascended to the throne as Kabaka of the Kingdom of Buganda in 1939, inheriting the leadership of one of Africa’s most prominent traditional kingdoms during his formative years.

His reign spanned three decades of transformation for both Buganda and Uganda as a nation. In 1962, as Uganda approached independence from British colonial rule, Muteesa II became the first President of Uganda, representing a pivotal moment when traditional authority and modern statehood converged. His leadership during this transitional period made him a central figure in Uganda’s early years of independence.

Muteesa II’s life ended on November 21, 1969, in London, following complications related to intoxication. He was laid to rest in Kampala, his birthplace, where his legacy as a bridge between Buganda’s ancient kingship and modern Uganda’s founding would endure. His tenure as both Kabaka and President left an indelible mark on the nation’s history.
