Biography

Missak Manouchian was born on September 1, 1906, in Adıyaman, Armenia, during a time of profound upheaval for his people. His life would be marked by a deep commitment to justice and freedom, expressed through both the written word and courageous action. He grew into a man of conviction, wielding his talents as a poet while also dedicating himself to the resistance movement during one of history’s darkest periods.

During the Nazi occupation of France, Manouchian joined the fight against tyranny, becoming an active member of the resistance. His determination to oppose fascism reflected the values that had shaped him throughout his life—a belief in human dignity and the power of standing against oppression. On February 21, 1944, he was executed by gunshot at Fort Mont-Valérien, a military fortress in Suresnes that had become a site of Nazi executions.

Though his life was cut short at just thirty-seven years old, Manouchian’s legacy endures as a testament to the power of resistance and principle. He was laid to rest at Cimetière parisien d’Ivry in Ivry-sur-Seine, France, where his memory remains honored among those who gave their lives for freedom.
