Biography

Minoru Genda was born on August 16, 1904, in Hiroshima, Japan, during a pivotal period in his nation’s modern history. He would go on to serve his country in multiple capacities across the twentieth century, distinguishing himself as an officer in the Imperial Japanese Navy and later as a general in the Japan Self-Defense Air Force. His long career reflected the dramatic transformations Japan experienced from the pre-war era through the post-war period of reconstruction and renewal.

Throughout his life, Genda held positions of significant responsibility that spanned both military and political spheres. His expertise and leadership were called upon during some of Japan’s most challenging chapters, and he remained engaged in public service well into his later years. He lived through wars, occupation, and national rebirth, adapting his role and contributions as circumstances demanded.

Genda spent his final years in Matsuyama, where he passed away on August 15, 1989, just one day before his eighty-fifth birthday. He left behind a legacy as a figure who bridged Japan’s military past with its democratic future, having navigated the complexities of serving through vastly different eras of national life.
