Meir Kahane 1932 – 1990
Biography
Meir Kahane was born on August 1, 1932, in Brooklyn, New York, where he spent his formative years before later establishing himself as a prominent religious and political figure. He dedicated his life to religious study and teaching, becoming known as a rabbi whose voice commanded attention across communities. Beyond his religious work, Kahane distinguished himself as a writer whose ideas reached audiences through the written word, contributing to public discourse on matters central to his convictions.
In his later years, Kahane became a political figure, representing views at the far right of the political spectrum in both American and Israeli contexts. His career reflected a deep engagement with what he considered essential issues of his time, though his positions often generated significant controversy and debate.
Kahane’s life came to a tragic end on November 5, 1990, when he was killed by gunshot wound in Manhattan. His remains were laid to rest at Har HaMenuchot cemetery in Jerusalem, Israel, reflecting his deep connection to the land and people of Israel that had shaped much of his adult work and identity.
