Biography

Matilda of Boulogne was born on January 1, 1105, in the coastal city of Boulogne-sur-Mer, France. Coming from one of northern France’s most prominent noble families, she was raised in an environment of considerable privilege and political significance. Her early life was shaped by the expectations and opportunities afforded to daughters of the high nobility during the early medieval period.

Through her marriage, Matilda rose to prominence as Queen Consort of England, a position that granted her considerable influence at court. She also held the title of Countess of Boulogne, maintaining important connections to her native French lands. Throughout her life, Matilda navigated the complex responsibilities of royal and noble status, serving as a bridge between the English Crown and Continental nobility during a transformative period in medieval history.

Matilda spent her final years at Hedingham Castle, where she died on May 10, 1152, after falling ill with fever. Her death marked the end of a life spent in service to royal and noble duties. Though the location of her burial remains unrecorded, her legacy endured through her family and her role in the political landscape of twelfth-century England and France.
