Maria, Queen of Sicily

Biography

Maria of Sicily was born on July 10, 1363, in Catania, where she would eventually be remembered as a significant ruler of her time. As Queen Regnant of Sicily, she held sovereign authority over her kingdom during a pivotal period in Mediterranean history. Beyond her rule in Sicily, Maria also served as Duchess of Athens and Neopatria, extending her influence across multiple territories. Her connections to the broader European nobility were further strengthened through her role as Crown Princess consort of Aragon, linking her family to one of the era’s most powerful kingdoms.

Though her reign was significant, Maria’s life was cut short when she succumbed to plague on June 3, 1401, in Lentini at the age of thirty-seven. Her death marked the end of a life spent navigating the complex political landscape of medieval Mediterranean rule. The respect accorded to her memory was evident in her burial at Catania Cathedral in her native city, a fitting resting place for a woman who had carried the responsibilities of queenship across multiple realms. Maria’s legacy endured in the histories of Sicily and the territories she governed.
