Margaret, Maid of Norway 1283 – 1290
Biography
Margaret was born on April 16, 1283, in Tønsberg, Norway, during a time of significant political importance in Scandinavia and the British Isles. As Queen of Scotland, she held a position of considerable significance despite her young age. Her life, though brief, connected the royal houses of Norway and Scotland through her birth and the circumstances of her reign.
On September 1, 1290, Margaret passed away in Kirkwall, at only seven years of age. The cause of her death was not recorded in historical documents, leaving many details of her final days unknown. Her passing marked a turning point in Scottish history, as she was the last direct heir of the Scottish royal line at the time of her death.
Margaret was laid to rest at Bergen Cathedral in Bergen Municipality, Norway, a final resting place befitting her royal status. Though her life was remarkably short, she remains remembered as an important figure in medieval Scottish and Scandinavian history. Her legacy reflects the complex dynastic connections and political alliances that shaped the northern European kingdoms of the thirteenth century.
