John, King of Denmark 1455 – 1513
Biography
Born in Aalborg on February 11, 1455, John would become one of the Nordic region’s most significant monarchs during the late medieval period. His reign extended across three kingdoms—Denmark, Norway, and Sweden—giving him dominion over vast territories and diverse peoples throughout Scandinavia. Through his rule, John shaped the political landscape of Northern Europe during a transformative era.
John’s life spanned fifty-eight years, marked by his responsibilities as a uniting force across the Nordic realms. He maintained his connection to his birthplace throughout his lifetime, and it was in Aalborg where his life would ultimately end. On February 20, 1513, following a tragic horse fall, King John died at an advanced age for his time, just nine days after his fifty-eighth birthday.
In keeping with the honor befitting a monarch of his stature, John was laid to rest at St. Canute’s Cathedral in Odense Municipality. His burial place reflected both the religious devotion and royal dignity that characterized his era. Through his long reign and his legacy across three kingdoms, John left an enduring mark on Scandinavian history.
