Biography

Jérôme Bonaparte was born on November 15, 1784, in Ajaccio, Corsica, into a family whose name would become synonymous with European history. As the youngest brother of Napoleon I, he occupied a unique position within one of history’s most influential dynasties. His life spanned nearly eight decades during a period of profound political and social transformation across the continent.

Though the specific details of his career remain unrecorded in the available sources, Jérôme’s significance lay partly in his family connections and his witness to the dramatic events of the Napoleonic era. Living through the rise and fall of his brother’s empire, he experienced the full arc of this tumultuous period in European history, from revolutionary fervor to imperial ambition and eventual decline.

Jérôme died on June 24, 1860, at the château de Vilgénis, having lived into the era following his brother’s death. His life bridged the late eighteenth century with the nineteenth, representing a direct link to one of history’s most consequential figures. Upon his death, he was honored with burial in the Cathédrale Saint-Louis-des-Invalides in Paris, a final testament to his place within the Bonaparte legacy and French national memory.
