Biography

Jean-Baptiste Lully was born on November 28, 1632, in Florence, Italy, during a time of great artistic flourishing across Europe. Though he entered the world in Italy, it was in France where he would forge his most enduring legacy, eventually becoming one of the most influential composers of his era. His career spanned decades of creative achievement, during which he shaped the musical landscape of the French court and beyond.

Lully spent much of his professional life in Paris, where he developed his distinctive musical voice and earned recognition for his compositions. His work bridged the Italian and French musical traditions, creating something entirely his own that captivated audiences and established new standards for musical excellence. His contributions to composition would influence generations of musicians who followed.

On March 22, 1687, Lully died in Paris at the age of fifty-four, his life cut short by gangrene. He was laid to rest at Notre-Dame-des-Victoires in Paris, a final resting place befitting a man of his stature and accomplishment. Though his time on earth was finite, his artistic legacy endured, securing his place among the great composers of the seventeenth century.
