Ivan II of Moscow 1326 – 1359
Biography
Ivan II of Moscow was born on April 7, 1326, in the heart of Moscow during a formative period in Russian history. As Grand Prince of Moscow, he inherited responsibility for a principality that was gradually consolidating power in the fragmented landscape of medieval Russia. His leadership during the mid-fourteenth century contributed to the development of Moscow as a central authority in the region.
Ivan II spent his entire life in Moscow, the city of his birth, where he would also spend his final days. He died on November 21, 1359, at the age of thirty-three, leaving behind a legacy as a ruler of his time. Though the specific circumstances of his death were not recorded for posterity, his life represented an important chapter in the early history of Moscow’s rise to prominence.
His final resting place became the Cathedral of the Archangel, located in the Tverskoy District of Moscow, where he was interred. This burial site reflected his status as Grand Prince and ensured his memory would be preserved within one of the city’s most significant religious structures. Ivan II’s reign, though relatively brief, remained part of the foundation upon which Moscow’s future power would be built.
