Hormizd II 300 – 309
Biography
Hormizd II was the eighth emperor of the Sasanian Empire, a ruler whose reign marked an important chapter in Persian history. He was born on January 1, 300, inheriting a vast empire that stretched across the Near East. Though details of his early life remain sparse in historical records, his ascension to power placed him among the succession of Sasanian monarchs who governed one of antiquity’s most influential civilizations.
During his nine-year reign until 309, Hormizd II led the Sasanian state through the complex political and military challenges of his era. The Sasanian Empire under his rule maintained its position as a major world power, spanning territories that included present-day Iran and surrounding regions. Like many rulers of his time, the specific accomplishments and events of his administration have been partially lost to history.
Hormizd II passed away on January 1, 309, concluding his reign after nearly a decade of rule. His final resting place was Naqsh-e Rustam in present-day Marvdasht County, Iran—a sacred necropolis where Sasanian monarchs and nobles were traditionally interred. This burial site underscored his significance within the empire’s royal lineage and remains an important archaeological landmark today.
