Hans Memling was born on January 1, 1435, in Seligenstadt, Germany, during a transformative period for European art. Over the course of his lifetime, he would become one of the most accomplished painters of his era, blending German and Flemish artistic traditions into a distinctive body of work that earned him recognition throughout Northern Europe. In 1494, on August 20, Memling passed away in Bruges, the Flemish city that had become his adopted home and the center of his artistic practice. His death marked the end of a remarkable life devoted to the painter’s art. He was laid to rest at Sint-Gilliskerk in Bruges, honored in the city where he had spent his most productive years and left an indelible mark on the artistic community.
