Hans Martin Sutermeister 1907 – 1977
Biography
Hans Martin Sutermeister was born on September 29, 1907, in the small Swiss village of Schlossrued. Throughout his life, he distinguished himself through a dual career that bridged the worlds of medicine and literature—professions that often demand very different kinds of precision and creativity. His work as a physician grounded him in the practical realities of human health and suffering, while his writing allowed him to explore and communicate these experiences in ways that reached beyond the examination room.
Sutermeister spent his professional years contributing to both his medical practice and the Swiss literary world. His unique perspective as someone trained in science yet drawn to the written word gave his work a distinctive character. He remained active in these pursuits throughout his lifetime, maintaining his residence in Switzerland and becoming part of the country’s intellectual fabric during the twentieth century.
He passed away on May 4, 1977, in Basel at the age of sixty-nine. His final resting place is Friedhof am Hörnli in Riehen, Switzerland, where he was laid to rest. Hans Martin Sutermeister’s legacy reflects a life dedicated to both healing and understanding the human experience through the power of words.
