Biography

Born into one of Europe’s most prominent royal families on April 18, 1890, in Saint Petersburg, Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna of Russia carried the weight of imperial heritage from her earliest days. As the daughter of Grand Duke Paul Alexandrovich and Princess Alexandra of Greece and Denmark, and granddaughter of Tsar Alexander II, she was positioned at the heart of Russian aristocratic life during a period of profound historical change.

Maria Pavlovna’s life spanned nearly seven decades of transformative European history. Though born to privilege and power in the Russian imperial court, she witnessed the upheaval that would reshape her world forever. Her journey took her from the palaces of Saint Petersburg across the continent, eventually settling in the German region near Lake Constance, where she lived out her later years far from her native Russia.

On December 13, 1958, at the age of sixty-eight, Maria Pavlovna passed away in Constance from pneumonia. She was laid to rest at Mainau, in the peaceful landscape of southwestern Germany, a final resting place far from the imperial city of her birth. Her life stands as a testament to the resilience of those who navigated the dramatic transitions of the twentieth century with grace and dignity.
