Biography

Gala Dalí was born on September 7, 1894, in Kazan, Russia, and became a significant figure in the twentieth-century avant-garde movement. Throughout her life, she worked as both a model and artist, contributing to the creative ferment of her era. Her influence extended across artistic circles, shaping the work of those around her through her vision and dedication to modernist ideals.

Gala’s personal life was deeply intertwined with her professional partnerships. She was first married to Paul Éluard, the French Surrealist poet, before becoming the wife of Salvador Dalí, the renowned Spanish artist. Through her marriage to Dalí, she became central to one of the twentieth century’s most distinctive artistic collaborations, supporting and inspiring his surrealist vision.

Gala lived a long and eventful life, remaining active in artistic circles until her death on June 10, 1982, in Port Lligat, Spain. She was laid to rest at the Castle of Púbol in Púbol, Spain—a fitting final resting place for a woman who had lived among the masterworks and creative genius of the modern era. Her legacy endures as a testament to her role as both muse and artist in her own right.
