Biography

Gabriela Zapolska was born on March 30, 1857, in Pidhaitsi, a town in the Galician region of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. She would become one of the most versatile and influential figures in Polish literary and cultural life during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Her career was remarkably expansive, encompassing roles as a novelist, prose writer, and publicist whose sharp observations and clear voice earned her considerable recognition.

Beyond her work as an author, Zapolska was deeply engaged with the theatrical world, serving as both a stage actress and theatre critic. These dual roles allowed her to shape cultural discourse from multiple vantage points—as a performer bringing characters to life and as a critic helping to evaluate and advance the art form itself. Her work as a feuilletonist demonstrated her ability to write with wit and insight across various genres, making her a dynamic presence in Polish cultural journalism.

Zapolska spent her final years in Lviv, where she died on December 17, 1921. She was laid to rest at Lychakiv Cemetery in that same city, a site that honors many of Poland’s notable figures. Her legacy endures as a writer and critic who contributed significantly to Polish literature and theatre during a transformative period in the nation’s cultural history.
