Biography

Frederick III of Denmark was born on March 28, 1609, in Haderslev, entering the world during a period of significant change in Northern Europe. His life would span sixty years, during which he would come to hold considerable influence over the Danish and Norwegian kingdoms.

In 1648, Frederick III ascended to the throne of Denmark and Norway, a position he would maintain for the next twenty-two years. His reign encompassed a formative period in Scandinavian history, and his leadership would shape the course of both nations during the latter half of the seventeenth century.

Frederick III spent much of his adult life at Copenhagen Castle, the seat of royal power and governance. It was within these walls that he conducted the affairs of state and oversaw his dual kingdoms. On February 19, 1670, his life came to an end at Copenhagen Castle, concluding a reign that had lasted more than two decades.

Upon his death, Frederick III was laid to rest at Roskilde Cathedral in Roskilde Municipality, Denmark, a burial place befitting his royal station. His interment at this historic cathedral secured his place among Denmark’s monarchical legacy.
