Biography

Franz Xaver Süssmayr was born on January 1, 1766, in the small Austrian town of Schwanenstadt, where he would begin his musical journey. He went on to establish himself as a respected composer and conductor in Austria during the late eighteenth century, a period of tremendous musical innovation and development.

Süssmayr’s career flourished during his time in Vienna, where he contributed to the musical life of the city through his work as both a composer and conductor. His professional dedication reflected the commitment expected of musicians working during the Classical period, a time when Vienna served as a center for Europe’s most important musical developments.

On September 17, 1803, Süssmayr’s life was cut short by tuberculosis at the age of thirty-seven. He was laid to rest at St. Marx Cemetery in Vienna’s Landstraße district, a burial ground that has held the remains of many notable Austrian musicians and cultural figures throughout history. Though his life was brief, Süssmayr’s contributions to Austrian musical life during this vibrant era remain part of the cultural heritage of his nation.
