Biography

François Mitterrand was born on October 26, 1916, in his family home, beginning a life that would profoundly shape modern France. Over nearly eight decades, he would witness the nation’s transformation through war, political upheaval, and reconstruction, ultimately leaving an indelible mark on French governance and European affairs.

Mitterrand served as the 21st President of the French Republic, holding this highest office from 1981 until 1995. During his fourteen years in the presidency, he navigated France through significant domestic and international challenges, steering the nation with the authority entrusted to him by the people. His tenure represented a defining chapter in contemporary French history.

On January 8, 1996, Mitterrand passed away in Paris’s 7th arrondissement, succumbing to prostate cancer at the age of 79. His final resting place was chosen to be Jarnac, in the Charente region, a location that held personal significance to him. With his death, France lost a towering political figure whose influence extended well beyond his presidency, cementing his position as one of the nation’s most consequential leaders of the twentieth century.
