Biography

Fernando Sor was born on February 13, 1778, in Barcelona, Spain, during a time when the classical guitar was emerging as a serious instrument for artistic expression. Over the course of his lifetime, he became one of the most influential Spanish classical guitarists and composers of his era, helping to elevate the guitar from a folk instrument to one worthy of concert halls and serious musical study.

Sor’s career took him across Europe, and his later years were spent in Paris, where he continued to develop his craft and contribute to the musical world. He dedicated himself to both performance and composition, creating works that demonstrated the technical and expressive possibilities of the classical guitar. His innovations and dedication left a lasting impact on guitar music that extended far beyond his own lifetime.

On July 10, 1839, Fernando Sor passed away in Paris at the age of 61, succumbing to esophageal cancer. He was laid to rest at Montmartre Cemetery in the 18th arrondissement of Paris, a final resting place befitting a musician of his stature and significance. Though he had lived far from his native Barcelona in his final years, his legacy remained deeply connected to the Spanish musical tradition and the classical guitar repertoire he helped to define.
